The Warhol welcomes back composer and cornetist Rob Mazurek (voted musician of the year by Italian jazz magazine Musica Jazz), with his latest ensemble Black Cube SP, which features his long standing trio São Paulo Underground, with the addition of Thomas Rohrer. This quartet features Mazurek on cornet and electronics; Mauricio Takara on drums, electronics, and cavaquinho (Brazilian ukelele); Guilherme Granado on keyboard; synths, and sampler; and Thomas Rohrer on rabeca (Brazilian viola) and soprano saxophone. The group’s debut record Return the Tides on Cuneiform Records (described by the label as a “cathartic and magisterial, post-tropicalia, modern psychedelic spiritual”) is a deeply personal and emotive tribute to Mazurek’s mother, who passed away just prior to the recording session.
Rob Mazurek is an American electro-acoustic composer, cornetist, improviser, and multimedia artist living in Chicago, Illinois. Working within a multitude of stylistic contexts, Mazurek rose to prominence in the mid-1990s Chicago creative music scene. Mazurek has drawn inspiration from a multitude of audio and visual styles and sources over the past three decades. Augmenting his cornet playing with computer programming, electronics, and an assortment of keyboards, Mazurek’s broad electro-acoustic palette defies simple categorization. Having relocated back to Chicago after an extended stay in Brazil, Mazurek currently leads and composes for a wide variety of ongoing ensembles, including the Chicago Underground Duo, Exploding Star Orchestra, São Paulo Underground, Pharoah & The Underground (featuring Pharoah Sanders), and, most recently, Black Cube SP.
