Sound Series: Jake Xerxes Fussell & Joan Shelley https://www.warhol.org/events/sound-series-jake-xerxes-fussell-joan-shelley/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 15:00:26 +0000 https://www.warhol.org/?post_type=warhol_events&p=14625 We welcome two unique songwriters and guitarists, Jake Xerxes Fussell and Joan Shelley, on a tour together, performing separate sets. Singer, guitarist, and folk music interpreter Fussell has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American South, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him.

Joan Shelley is a songwriter and singer who lives near Louisville, Kentucky, not far from where she grew up. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England. Since the 2015 release of her album Over and Even, Shelley has toured extensively, often with guitarist Nathan Salsburg and performing with artists such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Wilco, Patty Griffin, and Andrew Bird.

  • Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
  • Please note: Jake Xerxes Fussell‘s performance begins at 8 p.m.
  • This performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. Described by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein as “Mary Shelley with a guitar” and dubbed “a trailblazer and an innovator” by [Mary’s former guitar student] Lindsey Jordan a.k.a. Sound Series: The Ladybug Transistor with special guests Giant Day https://www.warhol.org/events/sound-series-the-ladybug-transistor-with-special-guests-giant-day/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 14:00:27 +0000 https://www.warhol.org/?post_type=warhol_events&p=13645 We welcome The Ladybug Transistor for a special appearance featuring members Gary Olson, Sasha Bell, Julia Rydholm, and Pittsburgh siblings, Jeff and Jennifer Baron. After initially forming in Brooklyn in 1995, the band released Beverly Atonale (1997), followed by their landmark The Albemarle Sound album (1999), then followed by Argyle Heir (2001), and the self-titled LP The Ladybug Transistor (2003). The albums all share a refined psychedelic-pop approach that often feature distinctive string and brass arrangements. Jeff and Sasha eventually departed from the group to focus on their parallel band The Essex Green. Jennifer formed The Garment District and Olson made his first solo record. San Fadyl, the original drummer, passed away in 2007.

In 2019 Gary, Jeff, Jennifer, Sasha, and Julia reformed for shows in New York City and Norway to celebrate the 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of The Albemarle Sound. 2023 finds them back on the road with a run of shows this summer and fall. The set list will highlight songs from 1999-2003 along with a few other surprises. The minimalist, electro-pop duo, Giant Day (Derek Almstead and Emily Growden), opens the evening.
