Known for his work in experimental and contemporary classical music, “Higgins composes with a scholar’s historical perspective and a punk’s sense of abandon” (Pitchfork). His work bridges genres and traditions including baroque chamber music, contemporary noise, and 20th century minimalism and has been performed in over 25 countries internationally at venues and festivals including SFMOMA, Unsound Festival (Poland), Monom Berlin, Sony Ginza Park (Tokyo), and ReWire (Holland). Higgins‘ forthcoming album planned for release in early spring on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People label, marks a new direction and development of acclaimed work as a guitarist and composer, drawing on electronic music, free improvisation, and avant-garde modern composition.

KMRU carries with him a repository of listening experiences from Nairobi and beyond expanding his sonic practices, bringing an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations and performances. He has earned international acclaim from his performances at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal and Présences électronique, and releases on Editions Mego, Subtext and Seil Records. Pittsburgh-based sound artist, Low Lumens (aka Danny Bracken), opens the evening.

They followed soon after with the first season of Andy Warhol’s T.V. The two episodes include Tommy Pashun, Julie Hagerty, Phobe Cates, Fernando Sanchez, and David Sylvian.

Kirby recently joined ANTI Records, and her 2021 release Cool Dry Place was featured in several best albums of the year lists including Pitchfork, NPR Music, and Paste. She has recently been touring with artists such as Waxahatchee, Andy Shauf, and Pinegrove. Singer/songwriter Allegra Krieger opens the evening.

Originally from Nashville, she released her debut album, Worthless, in 2014. Her most recent album, Anarchist Gospel, released in early 2023 on New West Records, has already made several Best of 2023 lists, and according to Rolling Stone, “It all amounts to a powerful statement from a singer-songwriter poised to become one of the year’s most vital voices in roots music.”

Reel Q LGBTQ+ Film Festival: Carla https://www.warhol.org/events/reel-q-lgbtq-film-festival-carla/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 16:29:01 +0000 https://www.warhol.org/?post_type=warhol_events&p=14161 Join us and the Reel Q LGBTQ+ Film Festival for the world premiere of Carla, a new documentary directed by Pittsburgh native Mara Rago. Tickets also include admission to the museum on the day of the screening. A happy hour reception with Mara Rago and members of Carla’s family will be held in The Warhol entrance space from 78 p.m.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A panel and a very special performance from renowned local vocalist Phat Man Dee and guests.

Carla is a new documentary from Pittsburgh native Mara Rago. Carla Beck looks back on the rocky road which led her from being womanizing rock n’ roll front man Carl Beck, lead singer of Rubaiyat, to becoming a woman, finding love and happiness.

Since Get Away from Me, Nellie’s debut record, she has released a number of well-received albums with as many different sounds, ranging from pop to jazz to rock & folk, always defying categorization. Her music has been used on radio, TV, and in the movies, and she has appeared on many shows, from Letterman to A Prairie Home Companion, as well as writing & performing acclaimed bios of Barbara Graham, Rachel Carson, Billy Tipton, and Joan Rivers.

A nominee for The Ovation award for Ethan Coen’s A Play is a Poem, Nellie won a Theatre World award for her work on Broadway in The Threepenny Opera, & Drama Desk award for off-Broadway’s Old Hats. She has written and activated for humans, animals, and the environment since childhood, and continues to push for peace & justice for all.

Join us for a screening of MS PGH Leather 1997, hosted by the contest winner herself, Tammy Resnick. 25 years since her year of service to community and kink, Tammy is the guide to a local leather story. Come early to join the crowd at the bar before The Warhol hits the lights and sink in for a treasure from the collection of the Pittsburgh Eagle. As a special reunion, all are invited after the show to PTown bar for a special surprise ceremony with the Three Rivers Leather Club. 

The MS 89 series is a live & in-person only nightclub archives screening event that pays community members to host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via our shared desire for a shared past.
